Is Battlestar Galactica Doomed?

If you’re a fan of Battlestar Galactica, you may want to read this list of 10 signs that the show is “turning a dangerous corner.”

Original Article:

It is with a heavy heart that I am forced to confront the possibility that the once-great show Battlestar Galactica may be heading to fraktown. After Friday’s head-clutchingly bad episode, which combined boxing scenes with barfy romantic flashbacks, my sense of foreboding has escalated into franchise panic.

Will our beloved show go Star Trek:TNG season 7 on us? Or, worse, Buffy season 6? Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. Read on for the ten signs that Battlestar Galactica is turning a dangerous corner . . .

10. Show co-creators Ron Moore and David Eick are both developing multiple other projects. Moore is working on BSG prequel show Caprica, and Eick is working on both Bionic Woman and Them.

9. Crucial subplots, such as the fate of Sharon and Helo’s hybrid baby, are left dangling for more than three episodes.

8. Rather than developing characters via personal transformation, character development is charted via hair length, presence/absence of beards, and weight gain/loss.

7. The only way the writers imagine they can showcase Edward James Olmos’ considerable acting talents is via long-winded speeches.

6. Cylon threesomes.

5. Too much intimacy with the mysterious Cylon enemy in their SM dungeon ship makes them seem campy rather than scary.

4. Entire episodes are clumsily devoted to single-word social issues like “torture” and “genocide.”

3. Eick promises next season will bring more flashback-heavy episodes that focus on romantic entanglements and/or childhood trauma.

2. A retcon turns Adama into the cause of the Cylons’ attack on the twelve colonies, thus making him both improbably important and too much of a bastard.

1. Boxing is used as a thin excuse for an episode that could have been written (better) by shippers.

Some Other Cool Webs of Mine

Wanted to share some of my other websites with you today. That is, some other webs I designed. A couple of them were for done friends and family and still live today, while a couple were just some older webs I installed on the server here to show them off.

PeterAcker.com

Here’s my buddy Pete’s personal site for his music. Pete Acker is a professional drummer currently living in LA. He went to high school with some friends of mine, Brett Weber and Eric “Wags” Wagner. I actually did not meet him then but many years later in a completely different place. It was an amazing coincidence that our paths should cross, but Pete is a great dude and we got to be pals.

I helped Pete with this site and he also helped me when I was first buying my boat. He’s a veteran sailor and offered much encouragement and advice at a time when I needed it. Good on ya, mate!

KimEdwardsOnline

I also wanted to share my sister’s web site for her music. Since she’s been away at college this year, there have been few updates. But I’m trying to talk her into a blogger style website so she can make updates regularly, as I do here. Kimi rules!

Faith Christian Center

This is the site for my parent’s church. It was designed a couple of years ago and I wanted to give them something stately and conservative.

Hunter RPG Campaign

This was the site I designed for one of my last role-playing campaigns some years ago. The guys I’d been gaming with quit after just a few adventures in this campaign. But I really put some effort into the site, so here it is. Some of the links might be broken, but the site itself and all it’s content is intact.

Mummy RPG Campaign

Another site I designed was for my first RPG in years. Mummy ran for several adventures and was quite good. Although the game system wasn’t quite workable enough for me to continue the campaign for very long, it was still fun to get back to gaming after many years.

Heroes Episodes Online!

The best new show of 2006 has to be Heroes on NBC. It is a cool and interesting take on the movies X-Men and Unbreakable. Ordinary people are discovering they have superpowers and that they are up against an unseen adversary. There are no capes and costumes to be found and both the story arcs and characters are excellent.

Although I like shows like Battlestar Galactica, Medium and Lost, Heroes is rapidly becoming the most enjoyable show on my TiVo schedule. I don’t really watch much television and TiVo makes it very easy for me to record new shows, then decide which ones to keep.

If you like, you can view the first season preview here:

Heroes — In Theater trailer

Anyway, Heroes is really a blast. But don’t take my word for it. NBC has made it available for everyone to get caught up with its biggest hit show. Just click on the link below and you can watch all the episodes of the first season (so far) in chronological order - for FREE.

They just took a break at the season halfway point and new episodes will be returning on January 22. But until then, you can enjoy all the coolness of the best sci-fi/fantasy genre show on network television.

South Park - Free Hat

In a memorable episode, the gang decides to form a club to stop Hollywood directors from redoing their past films. Definitely a classic.

Movie Previews: Stardust & Fido

I have just been reading up on two very cool-sounding movies, due out in the spring. The first is called Stardust, and it is based on a Neil Gaiman graphic novel. It promises to be a combination of the Princess Bride, the Chronicles of Narnia and Baron Munchausen. If it gets the right blend of fantastical and fun, it should be a great movie experience!

The second project has been described as a warped George Romero-style film. It’s about a boy and his pet zombie set in a 50’s style community after the end of the zombie wars, when walled communities have largely eliminated the threat and zombies have been pacified. Early reviews have been positive, and this one has completely flown under the radar.

Check out the links below for more information, and early reviews of both these films.

Stardust Synopsis:

Stardust is a fantasy, adventure love story. In the sleepy English village of Wall a young man named Tristian (Charlie Cox) goes on a quest to win the heart of his beloved, Victoria (Sienna Miller). His journey in search of a falling star Yvaine (Claire Danes) takes him into a magical world where he faces the witch, Lamia (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a pirate, Captain Shakespeare (Robert De Niro).

Fido Synopsis:

FIDO is co-written and directed by Andrew Currie. FIDO is a highly-stylized dark horror comedy set in a small town that has been frozen in an idyllic world reminiscent of the 1950’s. Here, the sun shines every day, everybody knows their neighbor, and rotting zombies deliver the mail. In this quaint, Rockwell-esque town lives a boy, Timmy and his best friend — a six-foot-tall domesticated zombie named Fido.

Early Review of FIDO from a prview screening (no spoilers)
