No Andy, the folly of man you refer to IS religion, and it is responsible for all the world's social retardation and stunted enlightenment. I find it both saddening and infuriating that you can so callously disregard the brutality, torture and devastation your 'harmless' beliefs have caused our civilization.

And I'll ridicule that fear-mongering and ignorance - the twin hallmarks of organized religion - all I want.

The only thing the Romans got wrong is that they ran out of lions...

Kevin,

I have to agree with everything you said - people find it easy to blame religion when its the folly of man that causes the vast majority of the worlds ills.

John,

I enjoy your site however your responses to Kevin are typical of what blights the world today - no tolerance for those who might have a differing opinion to you. Its ok not to believe in religion - its your choice. However, don't ridicule the vast majority of the worlds population who hold some sort of religious belief. Try having an adult conversation instead of reverting to name calling.

It goes against a lot of what you do post on your site which is why reading your responses to Kevin surprised me.

You're right. I stand humbled by your vast intellectual gifts. Explain to us all again how the dinosaurs lived 10,000 years ago? Pfffft..

You are really showing your ignorance now, you have not strung together a logical phrase never mind sentence and I don't think you know what the art of argument is either. Your view point on Ireland is no doubt dictated by your highly intellectual observations on TV. I doubt you have ever been over here. I take exception to being called a religious fanatic when I am not one. I happen to have a tolerant attitude towards all religious people and judging by some of your site articles (Namely the one in question) you clearly do not. I think you might have anger issues too. I would advise you to find inner peace for what its worth.

To be honest I have nothing more to say as I was expecting you to put up a decent debate instead you have lowered yourself to the level of colourful oratory. And lastly please don't insult real intellects by claiming to be one.

Apart from the anti religious fanatism I actually thought you had a decent site.

You come from Ireland, yet fail to see how retarded religious fairy tales inevitably lead to bloodshed. Good observational skills there, Spanky.

I was going to put together this witty, erudite reply to your original post. I intended to address each absurd statement and gleefully reduce it to rubble.

But I stopped arguing with religious fanatics like you years ago. It's like debating the existence of the Easter Bunny with a four year old: logic has no place on your side of the argument. And yes, you're ALL fanatics; you believe in talking bushes and 900-year old men. Only a fanatic could so willfully disband all logic in the face of such silliness.

The fact that we now live in the 21st century and yet there are still so many blighted ignoramuses in the world is reason for all good men to despair. Forgive me if I choose to live my life by a higher intellectual standard than the contradictory and cartoonish musings of a bunch of Jewish goat-herders.

You are talking complete nonsense - some of the greatest scholars now and in the past have come to us by way of religion. Just because some Englishman living in the states says something that is currently aligned with what You think, you believe him! Its the nutters practising under the banner of the various religions that are to blame not religion itself. If everyone was to follow the rules of their Churches correctly then there would be fewer problems. In case you didn't know Christianity isn't superstition, Jesus actually existed. And coming from Northern Ireland I know when I hear someone using biblical quotes for their own ends AND what that can do to people. I say it again - its not religion, its those that abuse it that are the problem.

Religion promotes fear and ignorance over reason. That is why organized religion is responsible for more bloodshed than any other cultural development in the history of our species, including the bane of Marxism.

Hitchens is right on target in saying there's absolutely no difference between the dangerous superstition of Christianity and that of Islam. Both represent the greatest threat to the survival of the human race and our way of life in the 21st century.

Have never heard a bigger load of rubbish in all my life - it equates to the argument that violent computer games make you go out and kill people. People have choice and if they choose to use religion or any other creed/ideology to justify their actions then it is they who are at fault.

Whenever there is a major world catastrophe, who are the first people on site? Yes the religious people/organisations - I don't recall seeing Mr Hitchens, humanists or atheists etc mobilising en masse to help.

Lastly everyone should condemn predjudice, violence, bigotry and anything that does wrong to their fellow human being. In particular the types of threat Mr Hitchens talks about is particularly reprehensible and anyone who carries this out in the name of any religion is excluding themselves from that religion by their actions.
