Most of the great philosophers, scientists, musicians, painters, writers, poets etc. in history came out of religion in any culture. In fact, almost everything human-made owe to religion; think astronomy, physics, mathematics, arts... Finally again, most of the contributions to 'Reason' in the history is made by religious scholars. For the ones interested in western culture, go read some Socrates, Thomas Aquinas, Hegel... to find out what I'm talking about; or simply read some Umberto Eco (who is an agnostic) to see how important religion is to mankind.
