Eva Cassidy - Somewhere Over the Rainbow

This is a great version of the old classic, recently featured in the opening credits of the film Alpha Dog. I’ve since learned the cover was performed by the late singer Eva Cassidy, whose voice has become legendary since her death in 1996.

The version she performed is really amazing, so I got a copy to share with you guys here.

The Sundays - Wild Horses

Sometimes I think I put up a few too many Jukebox posts, but then I note that they are often the most-viewed and commented-upon posts on my site. I have also been posting more recent hit songs and not necessarily been sharing as many tracks from my library, as I did when I first started this blog.

Well, the long and the short of all this hot air is that today I’m featuring another classic favorite from my stash. Anyone who knows me knows I am the biggest fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This song was originally featured in the 3rd season finale and provided a very emotional crescendo to what was a very moving storyline. The song is a cover of the original Rolling Stones and is quite haunting and pretty in it’s own right.

April March - Chick Habit

I heard this song at the end of Grindhouse the other day (great movie, by the way!). It was a typical end-credits track from Tarantino, who always finds the most quirky-cool songs for his movies.

I think you’ll love it!

Will Young - Who Am I?

Been listening to this song for a couple of weeks now since I first heard it on someone’s Myspace page. I don’t know who Will Young is. Evidently, from the pictures I’m finding on the web, he must be a past winner of the British version of American Idol (”Pop Idol”).

Anyway, Will Young, whoever you are, I like your song.

Sarah Brightman - Scarborough Fair

Great cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, done with a haunting Celtic flair. It’s another grey, moody day in the Northeast. Drift along with this cool song by one of the great voices in New Age music.

Crowded House - Weather With You

I’ve been listening a lot lately to Crowded House and their Greatest Hits compilation. I’d never owned a CH album before (although I’d loved their seminal hits from the ’80s), but got more into their whole body of work after seeing their farewell tour performance in Sydney on VH1.

Recurring Dream: The Very Best Of Crowded House is an awesome album. This is the first track and one of my favorites on the whole record.

Jethro Tull - Requiem

Was never a big fan of Tull’s modern rock stuff, but loved a lot of the medieval pieces he composed for albums like Minstrel in the Gallery and Broadsword and Beast.

One of my favorite songs of this type was off Gallery. “Requiem” is a hauntingly beautiful song that hearkens back to a simpler age. You can almost close your eyes and be transported to a bygone era of firelight chambers and English gardens.

It’s just one of those songs that seems to end too soon; it could go one forever.

The Cinematics - Break

Just saw the video for this song late at night a few days ago. Seemed like a real cool song, so I looked it up and decided to stream it here.

I’m definitely going to look into the band and get back more news about them. The song has an 80s New Wave vibe and a pretty good riff on the chorus. Enjoy!

Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape

This is the second single off Gwennie-Gwen-Gwen’s second solo album and I’m really enjoying it. I don’t have the whole album yet, so I’m not ready to pass judgment. But her last CD was pretty great.

Now Orange County’s Most Adorable is back and sounding great!

Oasis - Stop Crying Your Heart Out

This particular favorite of mine has been around for several years now. I’ve been waiting for a day when the mood was right and the sun was shining. Today is one of those days, after I have been feeling down for so many weeks. I feel like life is turning a corner and the clouds are parting. And this song is for everyone who’s ever felt hope like this.

Although some of the lyrics seem sad, there is hope in these words — and the music soars like few other songs do. I hope the song uplifts you as much as it does me!

Cos all of the stars are fading away
Just try not to worry you’ll see them some day
Take what you need and be on your way
And stop crying your heart out..
