Ivy Sinclair was born August 16th, 1977
in New York City, the only child of Michael Benson and Emily Sinclair
-- a pair who has never married, but lived in the same apartment since
Ivy was born.
"Parental responsibility", they called it. Of course, with Michael's
violent alcoholism, there was not much responsibility.
Regardless, Ivy excelled in school, using her studies as an escape
from her family life, often spending hours at a time at the library,
working on projects for extra credit. Even if she was a straight A
student who didn't need it.
Because of this, she had few friends, but actually grew quite close to
a girl she'd tutored in seventh grade, Talia Hannigan. Even if the two
girls were complete opposites, they took a little bit of comfort in
each others problematic lives -- Ivy with her shambled domestic life,
and Talia with her high-strung partying.
Even if, at times, Ivy could not stand watching her friend go the same
route as Michael. Surprisingly, when Ivy graduated, she turned down
several Ivy League schools and enrolled in a local community college,
pursing a career in Paramedics. She insisted that this way, she'd be
able to get out into the world and serve a purpose sooner -- And for
some odd reason, she seems to always be present when there's an abuse
case called into the ER.
One case she missed, however, is one that haunts her with unshakable
guilt.
Early in April 1997, Ivy was working on the other side of the city,
assisting with a minor fire call, and her radio crackled with news of
the one thing she dreaded would happen eventually...
"We've got an abuse call on 178th Street, 5214, Apartment L5...female
with a severe back injury..."
Ivy's home.
Her mother.
A call she couldn't rush to, as she was already occupied.
When she finally got back to the hospital, the news of prognosis
devastated her. Paralysis.
A restraining order was set against her father, but any other charges
were dropped.
A slap on the wrist, as far as Ivy was concerned.
For next two years, Ivy lived with Emily, attending to as much as she
can, an working double shifts to keep money flowing in the house.
However, in spring of 1999 the older Sinclair insisted to be put in a
private care facility -- She'd said Ivy needed to get out in the world
and not worry about things she should not have to be responsible.

At
about the same time her mother told her this, Ivy got a phone call
from her longtime friend Talia, who want her to move in with her in up
state new York. For Ivy, this was a golden opportunity, and she
grudgingly seized it moving to Roshmere the end of spring.
Talia insisted the Ivy continue her education an force her to enroll
to the local University. Now living 300 miles away from the city she
grew up in and the mother she still feels responsible for she once
again uses her studies as a means of escape.
